OpenAgent vs Freshdesk: per-agent suite + AI session packs vs flat per-site
Freshdesk is the value pick among the big helpdesk suites, and Freddy is a real AI layer. The catch is that every axis meters separately: seats, AI sessions, and Copilot licences each get their own line on the invoice.
TL;DR
Freshdesk is a mature, full-suite helpdesk: ticketing, SLAs, automations, and a marketplace of 1,200+ apps at a lower entry price than Zendesk-class rivals. If you need deep ticketing workflows across a large agent team, it earns its seat fees.
The structural difference is that Freshworks meters three things separately: seats ($19-$89/agent/month), customer-facing AI (Freddy AI Agent, $49 per 100-session pack, so $0.49 a session), and agent-assist AI (Freddy Copilot, $29/agent/month, Pro plan and above only). OpenAgent has one flat per-site fee and the model bill goes to your LLM provider at cost.
Pricing (verified July 2026)
| What you pay for | Freshdesk | OpenAgent |
|---|---|---|
| Platform fee | $19 (Growth), $55 (Pro), $89 (Enterprise) per agent/month, annual billing | $1/site/month founder rate ($9.99 list) |
| Customer-facing AI | Freddy AI Agent: $49 per 100 sessions ($0.49/session); 500 sessions included once, not monthly | Your LLM at provider list price (roughly $0.001-0.02/conversation on Gemini) |
| Agent-assist AI | Freddy Copilot: $29/agent/month, Pro and Enterprise only | Included |
| AI-enabled agent floor | $84/agent/month (Pro $55 + Copilot $29) | Flat fee, unlimited seats |
| When the AI budget runs out | The bot stops answering until you buy another pack | Never stops; you control the LLM spend directly |
The session definition matters: one chat session covers 24 hours of interaction, one email session covers 72 hours. A customer who comes back on day three is a new session. At 5,000 AI sessions a month you are at $2,450/month in packs, about $29,400 a year, before any seat fees. The same volume through OpenAgent on Gemini Flash runs in the low hundreds per year, paid to Google, not to us.

When Freshdesk is the right call
- You live in tickets, not chats. Multi-stage ticketing with SLAs, escalation matrices and collision detection is Freshdesk's home turf, and it is genuinely good at it.
- You need the marketplace. If your stack depends on specific Freshworks apps or the wider suite (Freshservice, Freshsales), one vendor for everything has real value.
- Predictable low volume. At a few hundred AI sessions a month, the pack model stays cheap and the $19 Growth tier is a fair price for a full helpdesk.
When OpenAgent is the right call
- AI handles most of your volume. $0.49/session looks small until the AI is resolving thousands of conversations a month. Paying your LLM provider directly removes the markup entirely.
- You refuse to let the bot go dark. Freddy stops responding when the session balance hits zero. Your busiest week is exactly when that happens.
- Growing team, flat budget. Every support hire on Freshdesk Pro with Copilot is $84/month before they answer a single ticket. OpenAgent seats are free.
