Intercom alternative
Intercom alternative: OpenAgent vs Intercom on pricing, AI cost, and feature parity
If you are scoping an Intercom alternative for the cost or the BYO-LLM angle, this is the parity comparison. Intercom is a great product, especially if you are already on it. The AI billing model is what teams keep flagging as misaligned with how they actually grow.
TL;DR
Intercom is a polished, mature product with a deep ecosystem (Series, Workspaces, Surveys, Articles) and Fin, an AI agent that competes with the frontier on tone and reasoning. It costs serious money.
OpenAgent is a focused live-chat + AI agent product. We don't ship Series, Workspaces, Surveys, or Articles. We do ship live chat, the AI agent on your own LLM keys, RAG, a built-in CRM and a flat per-site fee. For most support workspaces, that's the whole job.
Pricing, head-to-head
| What you pay for | Intercom | OpenAgent |
|---|---|---|
| Platform fee | From $74/seat/month (Advanced), often higher with usage | from $3/site/month (billed annually), $5 billed monthly |
| AI resolution | $0.99 per Fin resolution | Included; you pay your LLM provider directly |
| Per-seat upcharge | Yes, every seat | None; unlimited agent seats |
| LLM tokens | Bundled into resolution cost | List price, paid directly to Gemini/OpenAI/Anthropic |
| Sample bill, 5,000 monthly AI-handled tickets, 4 seats | ~$5,200/month (4 seats × $74 + 5,000 × $0.99 ÷ 1) | ~$9/month (1 site × $3 billed annually + 5,000 tickets × $0.0011) |
Two caveats on the Intercom number: not every conversation becomes a Fin “resolution” (Intercom has rules about which ones count), and they negotiate down for larger workspaces. The order of magnitude is correct.
Feature parity
What both products do, what only one does:
| Feature | Intercom | OpenAgent |
|---|---|---|
| Live chat (human) | Yes | Yes |
| AI agent with RAG | Yes (Fin) | Yes (your LLM) |
| BYO LLM (your keys, your account) | No | Yes (Gemini, OpenAI, Anthropic, OpenRouter, self-host) |
| Knowledge base ingest (PDF, URL, text) | Yes | Yes |
| Citations on AI answers | Yes | Yes |
| Slack / Google Chat alerts | Slack only | Slack + Google Chat |
| Smart routing & assignment | Yes | Yes |
| Built-in CRM | Yes (rich) | Yes (focused: contacts, tags, notes, export) |
| Series / lifecycle messaging | Yes | No |
| Help Center / Articles publishing | Yes | No (use your existing help center; we index it) |
| Surveys | Yes | No |
| SSO (SAML/OIDC) | Yes, Enterprise tier | Yes, Business tier |
| Dedicated infrastructure + data-region choice | Enterprise tier | Yes, Business tier |
When Intercom is the right call
Honestly: pick Intercom if any of these are true.
- You actively use Series, Articles, or Surveys. We don't ship those, and we're not planning to. Intercom does them well and the lock-in is real.
- You're already paying for it and procurement is hard. Switching platforms is more expensive than the $5K/month difference for a lot of orgs in year one.
- You need a one-vendor support stack for the next five years. Intercom is a safe bet for executive presentation.
When OpenAgent is the right call
- Your AI volume is past 1,000 tickets/month. The per-resolution math starts to dominate above that line.
- You have an LLM vendor relationship you want to keep. BYO LLM means you keep the contract, the audit trail, and the data residency.
- You're skeptical of black-box AI billing. $0.99/resolution is opaque; $0.0011/token on Gemini Flash is not.
- You want a chat product, not a marketing platform. We've scoped down deliberately.
Migrating from Intercom
Three things move cleanly: contacts (CSV export from Intercom, CSV import into OpenAgent CRM), help center articles (point our knowledge ingest at your existing Intercom Articles URLs and we'll index them as-is), and the embed snippet (one-line change in your site layout).
Three things don't move: Series, Surveys, Workspaces. If you rely on those, keep Intercom for those flows and run OpenAgent for chat + AI on the same site. The two don't conflict because OpenAgent's widget renders in a shadow DOM.
Try it on your own LLM keys from $3/mo.
$36 per site per year billed annually, or $5 per site per month billed monthly. No card on file, just paste your model key and your widget is live.
