Zendesk alternative
Zendesk alternative: OpenAgent vs Zendesk on price, AI cost, and what each is actually for
Zendesk is a deep ticketing platform with thirty years of CRM history bolted onto it. OpenAgent is a focused live-chat plus BYO-LLM AI agent product. If you need both, you probably need both. If you only need the chat half, the price difference is two orders of magnitude.
TL;DR
Zendesk is the dominant ticketing platform for support orgs that handle email, phone, chat, and case management on one queue. It does a lot of things and the pricing reflects that.
OpenAgent is a chat-first AI customer support product. We ship live chat plus a grounded AI agent on your own LLM keys, a focused CRM, and per-site alerts. We do not ship ticketing in the Zendesk sense (SLA matrices, queue routing across email/voice/web, agent productivity dashboards, etc.). For the chat-and-AI half of what Zendesk does, OpenAgent costs about 2 percent of what Zendesk costs at comparable volume.
Pricing, head-to-head
| What you pay for | Zendesk | OpenAgent |
|---|---|---|
| Platform fee, base tier | Suite Team: $55/agent/month, billed annually | from $3/site/month (billed annually), $5 billed monthly |
| AI add-on | Zendesk AI / Copilot: separate per-agent or per-resolution charge depending on contract | Included; you pay your LLM provider directly at list price |
| Per-seat upcharge | Yes; every agent seat | None; unlimited agent seats |
| LLM tokens | Bundled into add-on cost; not transparent | List price to Gemini/OpenAI/Anthropic in your account |
| Sample monthly bill: 4 agents, 5,000 AI-handled tickets | ~$3,500-5,000 depending on AI tier | ~$9 ($3 platform, billed annually + ~$0.0011/ticket Gemini Flash) |
Two caveats. Zendesk negotiates on volume; published rates over-state what large enterprises actually pay. And Zendesk includes things OpenAgent does not (email-channel SLA tracking, voice integration, Talk minute pricing, etc.). The order-of-magnitude difference holds.

When Zendesk is the right call
Pick Zendesk if any of these are true:
- You handle support across email, phone and chat uniformly. Zendesk's omnichannel queue is the industry standard for a reason. We do not match it and we are not planning to.
- You have an established Zendesk ops team. The switching cost on a mature Zendesk org (custom views, macros, triggers, automations, Explore dashboards) is real. It almost never makes sense to migrate.
- You sell to enterprise procurement that requires it. Some RFPs specifically name Zendesk or its tier as the baseline. Fight the spec or include Zendesk; do not bring a startup alternative.
- You need deep SLA + agent productivity reporting on ticket queues. Zendesk Explore is mature, drillable, and familiar to support managers.
When OpenAgent is the right call
- You are chat-first. If 80 percent of your support volume comes through a website chat widget, paying for Zendesk's ticketing engine is overspend.
- You want unmetered AI at sub-cent unit economics. BYO LLM at list price for tokens, no per-resolution markup, no per-agent AI seat charge.
- You are starting from scratch. If you have not built up a Zendesk org, the case for adopting one is weaker than it was even five years ago. Tooling has caught up; per-seat SaaS economics have not.
- You have an LLM vendor relationship you want to keep. BYO LLM means you keep the contract, the audit trail, the data residency, and the rates you negotiated.
The honest hybrid pattern
Several teams we talk to run Zendesk for email + phone ticketing and OpenAgent for the website chat widget on top. Two reasons it works:
- The widget renders in a Shadow DOM. No conflict with whatever Zendesk script is also on the page.
- Both can write to the same CRM via webhook. The team has one contact record per visitor regardless of which channel they came through.
This is not the cheapest setup, but it lets you keep Zendesk for what it is genuinely best at (email queue + omnichannel reporting) and get the BYO-LLM economics where 60 to 80 percent of your volume actually lives (chat). The OpenAgent half pays for itself in the first month even at small volumes; see the ROI calculator for your numbers.
Migrating from Zendesk
Three things move cleanly:
- Help center articles via URL ingest. Point our knowledge base at your Zendesk Guide URLs and we index them as-is.
- Contact records via CSV export from Zendesk Sell. Import into OpenAgent CRM with field mapping.
- The embed snippet. One
<script>tag on your site, replaces the Zendesk web widget.
Three things do not move: triggers/automations, macros, SLA policies. Those are Zendesk-specific. If you depend on them, treat OpenAgent as a side-by-side addition rather than a wholesale replacement (see the hybrid pattern above).
Try it on your own LLM keys from $3/mo.
$36 per site per year billed annually, or $5 per site per month billed monthly. No card on file, just paste your model key and your widget is live.
